Finance expert: 'hard to understand' why football clubs not using all options available

A Scottish football finance expert says he finds it "hard to understand" why some clubs are not using a range of options to protect themselves from the impact of coronavirus.

With games suspended for the foreseeable future, some clubs have chosen to furlough staff, so that they can access government funding to help pay part of their workers' wages.

But others, including Aberdeen, have chosen to instead ask staff to defer a portion of their wages for several months, rather than tapping into the UK Government's job retention scheme.

It is expected there will be a vote in the coming days on whether to bring the Championship, League One and League Two to an end now, though the SPFL wants to give the Premiership every chance of finishing.

Ken Pattullo from Begbies Traynor produces an annual report on the financial health of the game.

Last year's report found that, for the first time ever, no Scottish clubs were at immediate risk of insolvency - compared to England, where several clubs were at risk.

We spoke to Mr Pattullo about the impact of the ongoing shutdown on clubs north of the border, and what they can be doing to protect themselves from financial harm:
