Fifers feature in 2022 New Year Honours

A number of people who live and work in Fife have featured in HM Queen Elizabeth II's New Year Honours List for 2022.

Three St Andrews University academics have gained recognition.

Professor Anne Magurran, Professor of Ecology and Evolution in the Centre for Biological Diversity and the Scottish Oceans Institute, is to get a CBE for services to biodiversity.

Professor Ailsa Hall, Emeritus Professor of Biology and former director of the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), is receiving an OBE for her decades of work in environmental protection and epidemiology.

Dr Maggie Ellis, from the School of Psychology and Neuroscience at the university, is getting an MBE for her dedication to improving the lives of people with dementia.

Meanwhile, Owen Miller, the Fife paralympic gold medallist, is to be made an MBE for services to athletics after winning in the T20 1500 metres in Tokyo, as is swimmer Kathleen Dawson, who won gold at the Olympics, for services to swimming and women in sport.

Also, Angus Nicoll is becoming an MBE for services to the textile industry.

Until recently, he was the managing director of the last original linen weaving mill in the UK.

It started operating in 1825.

The mill did have a large number of employees in Kirkcaldy and the surrounding area.

Anas Hassan, our Kingdom FM reporter, has been getting his feelings about the honour:
