Fife Prepares For Winter

The school summer holidays may be poised to start but the Kingdom is already being prepared for winter.

6, 000 tonnes of salt was delivered to Glenrothes earlier this month, while 5, 000 tonnes is bound for Dunfermline.

Councillors say the winter of 2010, when much of Scotland came to a standstill due to snow, left its mark.

Cllr Pat Callaghan, Executive Spokesperson for Environment and Transportation, said: “The winter of 2010 is a distant memory, but it’s left its mark. Never again do we want to be put in the position where our salt stocks are running low. That’s why as soon as winter’s over we start planning for the following winter. We top up our salt stocks as early as possible by importing salt from Spain during the summer.”

“36,000 tonnes of salt should safely see us through next winter, even a severe one! Taking these steps now, assures a safer winter on Fife’s roads.”
