Fife academic warns we could head for coronavirus infection levels like earlier in the pandemic without action

Professor Stephen Reicher from St Andrews University

A Fife academic is warning coronavirus infection cases could return to similar levels to those seen earlier this year without action.

Professor Stephen Reicher, who advises both the Scottish and UK Governments, thinks doing nothing is not an option.

His comments come after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced tougher restrictions taking effect from tomorrow to curb Covid-19.

Five health board areas, Lothian, Forth Valley, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Ayrshire and Arran and Lanarkshire, will see pubs and restaurants close for more than two weeks.

Across the rest of Scotland, including the Kingdom, hospitality businesses will have to close their doors by 6pm each night.

Alcohol also can't be served indoors.

Ms Sturgeon provided a similar warning to Professor Reicher's at the Scottish Parliament yesterday and outlined the latest moves to try and limit the spread of the virus.

Speaking to Sky News, Professor Reicher describes where we stand at the moment in terms of level of infections:
