EXCLUSIVE: 'Stranded' Homesick Autistic Teen Self-Harming

Nina Ni and her son Tianze, who has severe autism.

A Fife teenager with severe autism - who cannot be cared for in Scotland - is self-harming over frustrations at being separated from his family.

Tianze Ni, must wait at least six weeks before he can be transferred from hospital in Middlesbrough to specialist school Beacon Reach in Preston because of legal issues.

The 16-year-old has been in hospital since June after being told he cannot return to New Struan school in Alloa after his behaviour deteriorated, and a violent outburst saw him trash his bedroom.

His parents, Nina and Clenton Chen, have been travelling to visit him on weekends, but sometimes see him for no more than 10 minutes because of his outbursts.

Nina says her son bit himself in front of her out of frustration at his conditions without much education or outside activity, and that the skin on his arms feels hard because they're covered in bitemarks.

It could be at least a year before Tianze could return to Scotland, if charities like the Rowntree Foundation or Autism Scotland can secure a home and care package for him.

Nina says her son is desperate to get home in time for his birthday, or at least Christmas:
