Ex-East Fife Boss Avoids Jail Over Scam Claims

Charges against William Gray were dropped by the Crown

A former chairman of East Fife has avoided jail over allegations he scammed over £35,000 in disability benefits.

Prosecutors accused William Gray from Kirkcaldy of wrongly claiming incapacity benefit for 8 years while working as a scrap metal dealer.

But charges were dropped after careful consideration of the admissable evidence.

The case was due to call again at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court for a further pre-trial hearing. However, the case was treated as "not called" - meaning there will be no further proceedings against Gray, who was not present.

A Crown Office spokesman said: "It is the duty of the Crown to keep cases under review and after full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case, including the available admissible evidence, the Procurator Fiscal decided that there should be no further proceedings taken at this time.

"The Crown reserves the right to proceed in the future should further evidence become available."
