Education System Failing Kids

Children are facing a postcode lottery when it comes to gaining a solid education.

The Scottish Conservatives say too many pupils from poorer backgrounds in Scotland are missing out on top school grades.

The party says that ultimately denies them access to university and college places, and improved career prospects in the long-run.

Figures revealed recently showed that the child poverty rate in Glenrothes currently rests at 28%.

A debate will take place today to highlight the attainment gap between children from deprived backgrounds compared to those living in wealthy families.

Scottish Conservative young people spokeswoman Liz Smith said:

"Scotland should be a country where every child has the same chance of a good education.

"But the reality is that it still matters whether you are rich or poor, with a pupil's chances of gaining good grades dependent on their postcode.

"Too many schools are failing too many of our children and that has to change.

"The attainment gap is so bad in some areas, that poorer pupils are twenty times less likely to achieve three As at Higher Grade.

"The time has come for radical action to get rid of the 'one size fits all' approach we have in schools and start offering parents - and pupils - a real choice.

"Schools should be led by parental demand and no longer be accountable to just the local council or central government.

"We need to look at adopting different education models from around the world to create more diversity within our education system Scotland.

"Not all children learn the same and they should not all be taught the same."
