Dunfermline's Dramatic Celebration Of A 'Great King'

Thousands of people flock to the famous city to remember Robert the Bruce.

Dunfermline is being transported back to medieval times.

The 2014 Bruce Festival is well underway with re-enactments set to take place in Pittencrieff Park against the backdrop of the King's final resting place.

With Scotland celebrating this year as Homecoming, the Bruce Festival, one of Visit Scotland's funded events, is set to be one of the biggest yet, as it recognises the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.

The festivities were kicked off on Friday evening by the male voices of Capella Nova.

The Knights Royal will lead visitors in a procession through the streets of the historical town to Pittencrieff Park, to mark the ceremonial opening of the festival today.

Another major highlight of the free two-day festival is the ferocious fighting of the battle re-enactments with noble steeds, falconry displays and medieval farmyard animals complete what will be a step back in time for visitors.

Maggie Mitchell, Chief Executive at Dunfermline Delivers said:

"As always, the Bruce Festival is set to be an event not-to-be-missed on Dunfermline's calendar.

"Our town is one of immense historical significance, and as it celebrates its central importance to Scotland's story, I look forward to welcoming all visitors to the festival as we re-establish our position as one of the country’s leading tourist locations - recognising Dunfermline’s heritage and dynamic future."
