Cyclists Descent On Parliament

Pedal On Parliament are demanding an increase in funding for cycling infrastructure

Thousands of cyclists are expected to descend on the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh today.

Pedal on Parliament is a grass-roots group of people who want to see Scotland become a place where active travel is safe and enjoyable for everyone, whether they cycle or not. Their demonstration is demanding an increase in funding for cycling infrastructure. Scottish Government targets are for 10-percent of all journeys to be made on a bike by the year 2020.

David Brennan, one of the event organisers, said:

"We're really looking for the government to take a slice of their money from the transport budget and invest that in cycling infrastructure, or at least allow councils to use that money and perhaps match that money themselves.

"It's incredibly important for Scotland, which suffers from serious health issues, from issues with pollution and congestion. Cycling can certainly be a large part of the solution to those issues."
