Cross-Party Devolution Talks

Scotland's five main political parties are meeting with Lord Smith to discuss handing over additional powers to Holyrood.

He's been tasked with getting the best settlement for Scotland after the country rejected independence last month.

It's hope cross-party agreement can be reached today.

Lord Smith said: "Having spoken to all of the parties individually, I believe the will is there to reach agreement.

"Today's talks give them the chance to sit down around the table together, find common ground and begin the process of delivering what the people of Scotland expect - a  substantial and cohesive package of new powers which will strengthen the Scottish Parliament within the UK ."

An SNP spokesperson said: "We are playing a full and constructive part in the process to deliver substantial new powers for the Scottish Parliament.

"Our key focus is on delivering 'powers for a purpose' – that means putting forward proposals that will deliver real change for the people of Scotland and better equip the Scottish Parliament to create jobs, protect public services and tackle inequality."

Scottish Labour Smith Commissioner, Gregg McClymont MP said: "Scottish Labour has submitted our proposals from the devolution commission to Lord Smith with a pledge to work with the other parties to get the best settlement for Scotland.

"The settled will of the Scottish people has been decided, a strong Scottish Parliament and Scotland's voice undiluted inside the United Kingdom - and we are determined that this is what they will get.

"We will work constructively with all parties to ensure that the maximum devolution is delivered to the Scottish Parliament while maintaining fair and equal representation of the people of Scotland within the UK."

"It's now imperative that all of the parties to the commission work together to provide a settlement which will guarantee the best future for the people of Scotland"
