Concerns Over Chlorine Water Levels

Residents in a Fife village claim their tap water may be leading to health problems.

Many in Blackdykes Terrace say they're suffering from arthritis and thyroid problems which they believe could have been caused by excessive chlorine in their water.

The World Health Organisation recommends no more than 5 miligrams of chlorine per litre of water - Scottish Water says it uses 0.5 miligrams per litre.

A test yesterday found one house had more than double the level set by Scottish Water.

Patricia Lessels says it's been a long running issue and she's working closely with neighbours:

In a statement, Scottish Water said: “The water in Falkland is safe to drink. We have investigated a report from a local customer of chlorine taste in their water supply and our samples showed that chlorine levels were slightly above normal.

“In the summer months we apply slightly more treatment due to changes on the characteristics of the raw water before it reaches the treatment works. As the temperature levels start to fall we gradually alter the treatment levels . We are taking steps to alter the treatment as a result of these seasonal variations.

“We regularly sample the water at the nearby treatment works and from customer taps to ensure the supply in Falkland constantly meets strict guidelines set out by the Drinking Water Quality Regulator.”
