Commonwealth Games 2014

More than 1 billion people across the world are expected to watch the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

It's been seven years in the making but the Commonwealth Games will kick off in Glasgow this evening.

The opening ceremony, which will be held at Celtic Park, will get underway at 8 O'Clock.

It's estimated the celebration will be watched by more than one billion people around the world.

Rod Stewart, Susan Boyle and Nicola Benedetti are just some of the famous faces taking to the stage.

First Minister Alex Salmond remembers the moment well when the General Assembly of the Commonwealth Games Federation announced that Scotland would host the 2014 event.

Meanwhile, around 4, 500 athletes from 71 competing Commonwealth nations and territories will compete in Glasgow over the next two weeks.

Hundreds of volunteers from Fife will also be stationed at many of the venues.

Doctor Sophie Mullens from St Andrews will be based at the Velodrome.
