Clean Up Delays

It's feared it could take another four years to remove radiation from Dalgety Bay beach.

The MOD will attend a meeting in February with locals to discuss clearing thousands of radioactive particles from the foreshore.

Last year, a £10 million repair plan was agreed to but local MP Gordon Brown has stepped in to call for the work to start in 2015.

Gordon Brown MP has asked the MoD for a faster timetable to start the work during 2015.

Mr Brown said:

"I praise the work of Colin McPhail and the Community Council in pushing for action.

"At the February Community Council meeting the Ministry will be expected to submit all their Planning, Methodology and Tender requirements.

"Having seen a go slow since the Management Strategy was agreed last July I think the community deserves nothing less than a firm timetabled programme.

"I also stated that 2018 is too long for the community to wait, and we will examine how the work can be done quicker once we see their programme.

"I understand a Project Team has been formed, who will develop the design, which should take 3 to 6 months.

"But I hope the Framework will be signed off in January 2015 between the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Fife Council and the MoD.

"I have been assured that the foreshore monitoring continues on a monthly basis and will carry on until completion of the remedial work. This costs the MoD about £36,000 to £40,000 a year for the monitoring alone, but it is an essential element of keeping the area safe."
