'Chuggers' Marring Scots' Views On Charities

Aggressive fundraising tactics are affecting perceptions of charities

The perceived unethical behaviour of fundraisers is impacting badly on how Scots view charities.

Because of cold callers, 'chuggers' and aggressive tactics, nearly 80% of adults say they ignore most charity letters and emails.

Only 1 in 4 of us will happily stop in the street to speak to a fundraiser, with 3/4 of us saying we feel 'bombarded'.

It follows the death of 90 year old poppy seller Olive Cooke, who said she felt 'pestered' by requests for donations.

The ComRes poll was carried out on behalf of charity funding tech startup eSolidar. Its founder Marco Barbosa said:

"It’s a shame that the poor practices of a small number of charities have had such a negative impact on the sector as a whole. Charities may be inadvertently wasting vast sums of money sending out mailings and alienating potential supporters as a result."
