Child Coeliac Cases Triple

The number of children diagnosed with coeliac has tripled over the past 20 years, according to a study.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham say 1.8percent of Scots aged two and above has the condition.

It's estimated the true figure is higher, with around a quarter of cases going undiagnosed.

The condition is an autoimmune disease where the patient's immune system reacts to gluten from wheat, barley and rye, making the body attack itself.

There is no cure or medication and the only treatment is a strict gluten-free diet for life. 

The researchers say the rise in new cases among children is likely to be the result of better awareness of the disease and how to diagnose it.
