Car Fires In Town

Police officers in Fife are currently investigating a series of car fires in the Glenrothes area.

A vehicle was set alight in a garage lockup in Sinclair Avenue on Sunday morning, while another two cars were targetted in Alexander Road.

Officers say the second was completely destroyed.

High visibility patrols are being deployed in the area, while members of the public are being urged to remain vigilant.

Detective Sergeant Samantha Davidson, who is leading the enquiry, said: "Although I have no information linking both incidents, they are similar in many respects. It appears that there was an attempt to steal one of the cars in Alexander Road, before it was set on fire. The second car was totally destroyed and I am unable to say whether an attempt had been made to steal that car before it was set on fire.

"What is clear, however, is that those responsible have total disregard to the safety of the occupants of nearby houses and had it not been for the prompt response of the Fire services, it is entirely possible that the fires may have spread to nearby properties."

Police are working with fire investigators to determine whether any accelerants had been used to start the fires, or if those responsible were trying to steal the cars and set them alight, after failing in their attempts.

Community Inspector Derek Paxton said: "High-visibility patrols are being deployed in the area and an increased presence will be maintained until this situation is resolved. I would urge members of the public to be vigilant about the security of their vehicles and ensure any valuables are removed. Anyone with any information is asked to call Police Scotland on 101 or supply the information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
