Call For Action On Leuchars Station Car Park

A year after Fife council allocated cash to expand the car park at Leuchars station there's been no progress on the project.

A Liberal Democrat councillor has called for action, after it was revealed that there has been no progress in expanding Leuchars Station car-park, despite Fife Council's Administration agreeing the funding a year ago.

Tay Bridgehead representative Councillor Tim Brett expressed his frustration with the lack of progress, saying, "As anybody can see, the car-park at Leuchars station, which was used by over half a million passengers last year, is too small. Many drivers have incurred fines because they have parked outwith the designated parking bays, having been unable to find an official space."

Councillor Brett continued, "Recently I was dismayed to be told by Transportation services that no progress has been made on the purchase of the land, so compulsory purchase is being arranged, which will have to be agreed by the Council's Executive Committee later this month. It could take a further fourteen months to complete this, then there will be 12 to 14 weeks for the tendering process and then the construction itself will take another six months. We could therefore be looking at a further delay of two years before the extension is built, which is completely unsatisfactory, given that the extra spaces are needed now."

Councillor Brett revealed that he had asked Administration spokesperson Councillor Pat Callaghan to take personal responsibility for the scheme, adding, "This lack of progress reflects a lack of urgency on the Administration's part. A period of three years from the decision to provide funding to the car park being constructed is unacceptable."
