Busy Weekend For Edinburgh Airport

Passengers being urged to plan their journey as the Royal Highland Show continues.

As the 2014 Royal Highland Show gets underway, Edinburgh Airport is calling on passengers planning on flying this weekend to be prepared and allow extra time to get to the airport.

With the airport's busy summer schedule now started and over 67,000 passengers expected to fly out this weekend, Edinburgh Airport is working hard with show partners to ensure airport operations continue unaffected.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit the showground from Thursday until Sunday, meaning roads around the airport will be much busier than usual. Traffic management is already  underway with signage up to guide show-goers safely to the Royal Highland Centre. 

David Wilson, Chief Operating Officer at Edinburgh Airport, said: 

"The Royal Highland Show is always a hugely popular event and we work closely with organisers, RHASS and external partners to ensure the event and our airport operations go as smoothly as possible.

"Naturally with an event of this size, roads around the airport will be busier than normal and this will have an impact on travel time to and from the airport. We're asking passengers to be prepared for a longer journey and allow extra time to travel. 

"For those travelling from the city centre we're encouraging the use of the tram and if you're coming from the west, the Citylink Air service runs every 30 minutes between Buchannan Street in Glasgow and Edinburgh Airport.

"It's important that we maintain safe operations at the airport and we'll be in regular contact with Police Scotland and colleagues at the Royal Highland Centre over the coming days and throughout the event. We’ll also be posting frequent updates on Twitter."

Supporting Edinburgh Airport's call, Stephen Hutt, RHASS Chief Executive, said: 

"We want everyone to have a smooth journey whether they are visiting the show or heading to the airport. Plan to leave 
earlier than you might normally do, follow the signs and keep up to date with our #RHStravel or Facebook. We have a dedicate team on the ground to support Police Scotland and with a good public transport system in place, we are hoping delays will be kept to a minimum."
