Bogus Roofer Sought In Kirkcaldy

Police are advising people to ask cold-callers for ID

Police in Fife are asking Kirkcaldy residents to remain vigilant when answering their door, following a number of cold-caller incidents.

A man claiming to offer roof maintenance and demanding payment has targetted people in their 70s and 80s on Overton Road, Overton Mains, Barnet Crescent, Tweed Avenue and Beatty Crescent. He is white, aged 25 to 30, around 5'8", with dark hair and carrying a ladder.

Officers are advising residents not to be embarrassed about asking for ID, and to call 999 if they feel threatened.

Sergeant Jimmy Adamson of Kirkcaldy said: "Crimes such as this, which target elderly or vulnerable people, are despicable and affect not only the victim but the entire community.

"We will pursue all lines of enquiry in order to bring the offender to justice but are asking for anyone with information which can help with our enquiries to come forward. We’re advising residents to be wary and use a door chain or bar whilst answering the door to unknown or unexpected callers. Don’t feel embarrassed about asking for ID – genuine callers will be happy to prove their identity. If you feel threatened or unsafe ask them to leave and dial 999.

"We’re also asking anyone with elderly friends, neighbours or relatives to be vigilant and call 101 should they see any suspicious behaviour."
