Bin Changes For Fife Residents

Recycling will be collected more often in parts of Fife

Half of landfill rubbish in Fife could actually be recycled, that's according to Fife Council.

Households will receive information from today detailing the changes that will be made to their refuse collections. It costs Fife Council over £80 for every tonne of landfill waste dumped. The local authority hopes to save £1.5 million per year by changing how rubbish is collected. Two different bin collections are to be trialled. Those affected are on routes 127 (Markinch and Coaltown of Balgonie), and 128 (Thornton and Stenton).

Councillor John Wincott, the council’s sustainability champion, said: "If you live on the new bin trial routes please look out for the leaflet coming through your door. It will give you an overview of what’s happening, why and when. Our recycling advisors will be on hand to help people adapt to the new service and you’ll also have a chance to discuss the trials at open information evenings in early September."

In both trials plastic and cans will be collected more often and household landfill waste will be collected less frequently. In Markinch and Coaltown of Balgonie, paper and card will also be picked up more often. Households producing medical waste or larger families with children in nappies will be able to request bigger blue bins or more frequent collections.

The trials will start in September and run for at least nine months.
