Assisted Suicide Talks

Campaigners for and against euthanasia are putting their views forward at Holyrood.

The Health and Sport Committee's taking evidence on the assisted suicide bill, which would allow terminally ill patients to end their lives when they choose.

A similar bill, brought forward by the late Margo Macdonald MSP in 2010, was rejected by Holyrood by 85 votes to 16 with two abstentions.

Umbrella group My Life, My Death, My Choice conducted a poll which found 78% of more than 1, 000 people backed a change in law.

Gary McLelland from the Scottish Humanist Society says just having a choice can be reassuring for many:

Critics argue that the law would see more people needlessly choosing to die, and have raised concerns over medication storage and coercion.
