8 In 10 Scots 'Want More Than Smith Powers'

Scots want more tax powers for the Scottish Parliament - according to an online poll.

More than 80 percent of participants said they want to see a written Scottish constitution.

The survey suggests the cross-party agreement to implement the Smith Commission proposals didn't go far enough in terms of further devolution.

Of the 1,512 responses to the survey:

  • 84 percent said they thought that the Smith Commission plans for further devolution did not go far enough
  • 87 percent wanted to see more powers devolved.
  • 88 percent thought Holyrood and Westminster should raise what they spend
  • 81 percent wanted to see a written constitution.

The Campaign for Scottish Home Rule conducted the study.

Commenting on the survey results, its Chair, Ben Thomson, said:

"While the respondents to the survey were self-selecting, the message that comes out loud and clear is that there is a real desire for a meaningful Home Rule settlement which gives us far more power to shape our own future, particularly in the key areas of welfare and taxation, while leaving responsibility for areas such as foreign affairs, defence and the currency at Westminster.

"The findings of our submission also back up the results from the over 18,000 submissions to the Smith Commission itself and numerous other opinion polls.  It is a pity that the Smith Commission did not reflect its own consultation process and it is high time that politicians listened to such repeated messages and acted upon them."
