50 years since Ibrox Disaster when five Fife teenagers died

66 people died after a crush at Ibrox stadium on 2 January 1971

Today marks 50 years since the Ibrox Disaster when five teenagers from the same Fife town died.

On 2 January 1971, a total of 66 people lost their lives after a crush at Ibrox.

It took place at Stairway 13 following a game between Rangers and Celtic.

Eight school friends from Markinch all went to the match, with five of them sitting in the Rangers end.

Those five, Peter Easton, who was 13, 14-year-olds Bryan Todd, Ronald Paton and Mason Philip and 15-year-old Douglas Morrison, were among the victims of the tragedy.

The other three, Shane Fenton, Peter Lee and Joe Mitchell, were in the west end of the stadium backing Celtic.

The three first found out something had happened while their supporters bus stopped in Kincardine on the journey home.

Shane says five decades on, the memories are still with him.

He also says while a big service can't happen due to the coronavirus pandemic, it's expected people will still be laying tributes and flowers this weekend at the Markinch memorial in dedication to the five boys who died:
