Scottish Labour Campaign: Europe Warning

Richard Baker MSP

A Scottish Labour deputy leadership candidate says his party must be ready to put forward a positive case for EU membership.

Richard Baker's comments come after it was rumoured that David Cameron is planning on bringing the vote forward to 2016.

The North East MSP is standing against Cowdenbeath MSP Alex Rowley and Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson.

Mr Baker said: "Whether it is rights at work or securing jobs, Scottish Labour has strong arguments to make for remaining in the EU.

"David Cameron's plans to bring forward the referendum on EU membership to next year mean that Scottish Labour must be ready to fight a positive campaign.

"I want young people to be at the forefront of our campaign - and I want our members to shape it.

"Putting forward strong arguments around  workers' rights and for being part of a globally connected world will allow us to work to regain the trust of the people of Scotland."

Meanwhile, leadership hopefuls Kan Macintosh and Kezia Dugdale will take part in a televised debate tonight.
