Lowest Earners 'Pay Most Tax'

The poorest are paying the most income tax, according to TPA

Families on the lowest income pay the highest percentage of tax on their wages, according to The Taxpayers' Alliance.

The research shows the poorest workers pay around 45% in income tax. Last year, the average household forked out £462 more in tax than they received in benefits and services.

The group's calling on the UK Government to reform taxes to ensure everyone is paying their fair share.

Jonathan Isaby, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

"This analysis shows how pernicious our tax burden has become. Not only does the tax system hit the poorest hardest, but those at the top are already contributing far more than anybody could reasonably describe as their "fair share." Our tax system is neither progressive nor reasonable, and the government must stick to its spending targets so that the radical reform we need can finally happen."
