Longannet Taskforce Long Overdue

Cara Hilton MSP says the taskforce should have been set up earlier

The taskforce set up to discuss the future of Longannet power station workers whose jobs are at risk should have been set up earlier.

That is according to one member of the group, Fife MSP Cara Hilton, who called for it to be set up several months before its announced closer earlier this month.

11-hundred jobs are at risk, with the Fife plant closing in March next year.

High transmission costs are being blamed for the closure of the plant by its owners, Scottish Power. They say there's a disparity in the charge between Scotland and the rest of the UK.

The Conservative government at Westminster is being blamed - they say Scotland is generating too much electricity, particularly from wind farms.
