GE15: Fife Artist's Candidate 'Selfie'

L to R: Jane Ann Liston - Liberal Democrats; Alex Stewart-Clark - Conservatives; Peter Grant - SNP; Stuart Russell; Melanie Ward - Labour

An artist from Fife is encouraging young people to vote in this year's general election, with a selfie.

Stuart Russell, a Fellow at the Royal Commonwealth Society, gathered the SNP, Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat representatives for the Glenrothes constituency together for a group photo. His aim is to encourage young people to use their vote on May 7th. He said:

"I kept getting pamphlets through the door about the general election, and I thought none of them spoke to me, none of them said anything on them that related to me as a young person, and I thought other young people must feel the same.

"I thought that the selfie would be a way of communicating the importance of voting to young people through instagram, through a medium that they use.

"Young people are often neglected by politics, the word youth is used as a negative in the media a lot. I do not think ageism has a place in society, I think young people are great, they are smart and they are vital to change. If they are not creating their own change, then who is going to?"

You can hear the podcast he created on the making of the selfie here.
