Report criticises Scotland's roads

A third of Scotland's local roads are still not in an acceptable condition according to watchdogs.

Audit Scotland says the number is shrinking but is still higher than it was 8 years ago.

The body's concerned some councils haven't yet implemented recommendations it made 2 years ago.

Meanwhile, Fife Council's revealed it gritted the roads 220 times between October and April.

Senior Roads & Street Operations Manager David Blackie said the area suffered due to extreme cold temperatures and they're now working hard to fix the damage.

Police launch bike crackdown

Bikers are being urged to make sure they're safe to ride this summer.

Police have launched a three-day campaign about the importance of making sure motorbikes are roadworthy.

They'll be targetting known hotspots like the Fife coastal roads.

It involves tiny cameras taking thousands of pictures of embryos inside an incubator to see which is most likely to lead to a pregnancy.

Now it will be trialled to see whether the new technology is any better than the current system.

Jobs bound for Dalgety Bay

Plans for a £4 million development on the edge of Dalgety Bay have been announced.

Scarborough Muir Group wants to demolish and rebuild the area at the entrance to Donibristle Industrial Estate, including the existing Play Planet.

The project dubbed the Gateway to Dalgety Bay is expected to create up to a hundred new jobs.

Siege at city centre pharmacy

A man and a woman have been detained by police after a three-hour armed stand off at an Edinburgh city centre pharmacy.

Staff and members of the public who were held hostage during the ordeal in Edinburgh's Royal Mile have been released safely.

Firearms officers deployed Tasers to detain the man during the incident at the Royal Mile Pharmacy.

The woman was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after she fell ill.

Error brings by-election nomination forward

Fife Council's admitted making a basic error while planning for a by-election.

The deadline for nominations for the Glenrothes North, Leslie and Markinch seat has been brought forward to Friday instead of Monday.

It's because officials didn't take account of a public holiday on May 27 when they were working out the timetable for the poll.

The firm's been accused of aggressive tax avoidance, but the online retailer insists it pays the tax it owes.

Latest plans to reform Europe's fishing industry are a step in the right direction, according to a Scottish MEP.

George Lyon's remarks come after fisheries ministers set out their proposals for reform.

These will now be debated by the European Parliament.

LibDem Mr Lyon says he's hopeful a deal can be reached that suits all sides.

Glenrothes shop named best independent gift retailer

A Fife shop has been named Scotland's best independent gift retailer.

The Kerr family, who run Harvey Willis in Glenrothes, picked up their trade award at the Savoy in London.

It was one of five Scottish finalists in the running for the award.

BP and Shell offices raided over price fixing claims

The London headquarters of oil giants BP and Shell have been raided by EU officials over price fixing claims.

Both companies say they're fully co-operating with the investigation.

If the claims are true - it could mean consumers have been paying over-the odds for their petrol at the pumps for years.

Tory MP Robert Halfon has been leading a campaign calling for a investigation into alleged cartels
