New curriculum impacting on workloads

Primary and nursery teachers in Scotland say the new school syllabus is putting too much pressure on them.

A survey by teaching union the EIS found 80% feel there's been a high or very high increase in their workload since Curriculum for Excellence was brought in.

And more than half say they're barely confident or not confident at all in the assessments used by the system.

Ministers insist they're taking the issue serously and working with unions and councils to monitor the issue.

EIS General secretary Larry Flanagan says members are worried it's affecting teaching.

Tributes to British soldier killed in London

Warm tributes have been paid to the soldier brutally killed outside an army barracks in south east London.

Drummer Lee Rigby's family described him as a loving son, husband and father who always wanted to be in the army.

His Commanding Officer says he inspired many other young people to join the armed forces.

Four people have now been arrested in connection with Wednesday's attack in Woolwich

Development plans unveiled in West Fife

Plans for a new supermarket in Dalgety Bay will be shown to the public today.

The proposal would see the existing buildings at the entrance to Donibristle Industrial Estate knocked down, including the popular Play Planet which would get purpose built new facilities.

Budget supermarket Aldi would open a branch there along with family pub chain Marston's.

People say they're also using smartphone apps and money-saving websites to plan their weekly shop and take advantage off all the best offers.  

Almost half of us say we're reducing the amount of food we waste to ensure we make the most of what we buy.

Soldier hacked to death in London

Scotland Yard's counter-terror unit is leading the investigation into the murder of a man who was hacked to death in London yesterday afternoon.

The incident in Woolwich has been described by the Metropolitan Police Commissioner as "shocking and horrific".

Two men, who were shot by police, have been arrested, they're in hospital.  

The victim's believed to have been a serving British soldier, prompting security to be tightened at army barracks across London.

The Prime Minister will chair a meeting of the government's emergency committee COBRA this morning.

More than £550 million was spent paying off public sector workers in just two years.

Watchdogs say almost 14, 000 staff got an early departure deal between 2010 and 2012, with each pocketing an average £40, 000.

The Audit Scotland report says most organisations expect to make savings from the payoffs over a number of years.

Oklahoma rescue comes to an end

After three days of combing through the wreckage of their storm-shattered community, officials in Moore, Oklahoma City, say all residents have now been accounted for.

24 people lost their lives in the tornado, which damaged up to 13,000 homes.

President Barack Obama has announced he will travel to Moore on Sunday to meet survivors.

High food prices hitting poor countries

High food prices are forcing major social change in poor countries according to Oxfam.

The charity's been studying the effect of rising costs on families in places like Bangladesh, Ethopia and Vietnam.

It's found more people are moving from rural areas to towns and cities to find work, while many women are being forced to work in poor conditons to put food on the table.

The powerful storm claimed 24 lives, including those of nine children.

Changes to welfare system criticised

There's a warning thousands of vulnerable people in Fife could be hit by changes to the welfare system.

By 2017, the UK government want 80% of benefit claimants to apply for jobs and support online.

However, research by Citizens Advice Scotland has found that barriers such as age or access to a computer could affect people's ability to apply for help.
