Google hints at Waze deal

Google's said to be considering buying mobile satnav service Waze for around a billion dollars which could lead to a bidding war with Facebook.

The social network's been linked to the sale because it's said to want its own mapping service.

Waze has 47 million users who use their smartphones to generate maps and keep other drivers up to date with real-time traffic information.

There's a warning of a "bailiff boom" as soaring numbers of people struggle to cope with council tax benefit cuts.

Citizens Advice says there was an 87% increase in people seeking help online in April, compared with the same month last year.

Bonus for Royal Mail exec

The Chief Executive of Royal Mail is in line for an annual bonus worth almost £500,000.

Moya Greene, nearly trebled profits last year and will lead the company as it readies itself for stock market listing later this year.

Royal Mail's remuneration committee is yet to sign off on the bonus, but is expected to do so by the end of July.

Rural homes save more

Savers in rural areas put more money aside than people in towns and cities.

A report from Halifax has found that those living in the countryside have £9, 435 placed aside, on average.

That's around £1, 300 more than their urban neighbours typically have.

petrol sales rise

Lower prices at the pumps have pushed up petrol sales, according to latest figures.

UK motorists bought 1.51 billion litres of petrol in April, a big rise on the record-low of 1.37 billion litres in March, according to the AA.

It says the price of petrol at the pumps fell around 8p a litre in April.

Money talks

The Co-operative Bank has started a roll-out of "talking" cash machines for blind and partially-sighted people across the UK.

More than 400 ATMs, which give spoken instructions, went live today.

And over 2,000 machines should have the facility by the end of 2014.

IMF to review UK deficit plans

George Osborne will receive the International Monetary Fund's verdict on Britain's economic prospects today, with speculation it will urge him to change course.

In its annual healthcheck on UK plc, the IMF is expected to suggest that deficit reduction should be slowed in otrder to deal with weak growth.

Fraud and error mounting

Billions of pounds of taxpayers' money is being lost because of the failure of HM Revenue and Customs to clamp down effectively on fraud and error.

That's according to the Commons Public Accounts Committee which claims in 2010/11 alone, one-in-five awards of tax credits are thought to have resulted in the claimants being overpaid.

Xbox One unveiled

Microsoft has unveiled its next generation video games console, Xbox One, during an event at its US headquarters.

The electronics giant says the new voice and motion-controlled device is an "all in one system" for games, live television, films and music.

Hollywood director Steven Spielberg appeared on video during the launch to announce a live-action television series of the video game franchise Halo.

Cyber crime hits small firms

Small firms are losing up to £800 million to cyber crime. The Federation of Small Businesses says more than 40 per cent of its members have fallen victim in the last 12 months. Twenty per cent of firms suffered virus infections, while others were hacked and had to deal with security breaches.
