SEStran Two Capitals Cycle Ride (Update)

April 25th, 2011

So the countdown has begun. 54 Days to go until The SEStran two Capitals cycle ride.

Here is my progress so far:

We I now have a bike which I suppose is the most important thing that you would need so I am half way there.

I have also indulged myself by purchasing some new gadgets for the bike, including a holder for my iPhone, a new HD Video Camera to film my cycle and also a wireless headset for music and also so I can make phone calls too.

I thought with my level of physical fitness I should maybe get in some training. So far I have managed a staggering 5 miles on my bike and I felt like I would never walk again.

I will be out and about this week and I will update you on how I get on.

Remember it’s not too late to register for the cycle. Just visit www.twocapitals.org/

Speak to you all soon

SEStran 2 Capitals Cycle Ride

April 8th, 2011

Ian, Darren, Ali and I have signed up for the SEStran 2 Capitals Cycle Ride which will see us cycle from Pittencreif Park, Dunfermline to Ocean Terminal, Leith. I am starting to think this maybe wasn’t the best of idea’s I have ever had, however I have said I am taking part so I feel I now have made a commitment.

If you haven’t heard about the 2 Capitals Cycle Ride it is a non-competitive, all-age, all-abilities event that aims to promote cycling for all. The only think stopping me now is the fact that I don’t have a bike and I am extremely unfit. So it’s not looking good. Even the children will come in before me.

If over the coming weeks you see a small fat man at the side of the road with a bike trying to get his breath it is probably me trying out the new bike I plan to buy on Thursday. Please stop and give me some encouragement.

A Garden Party, But No Knighthood… YET!

July 14th, 2010

It was all change on air at Kingdom FM yesterday as three quarters of the daily schedule were off air!

We, for reasons I’m still slightly unclear about, found ourselves invited to the Royal Garden Party at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh! The best suits, and in some cases kilts, were looked out and we all dutifully queued up for the Big Event of the summer. I say ’summer’ - the sun was certainly shining when we left Fife to head to The Capital - though by the time we arrived at Holyrood it felt more like November. While it stayed dry all day, it was windy and extremely fresh. Luckily I opted for a suit rather than a kilt so managed to avoid any ‘Marilyn Monroe’ moments but there were certainly a few ladies there who might’ve been glad of a few extra layers.

We caught a glimpse of the star attraction (Kevin Brady in his kilt) and also managed to be only a few feet away from HRH for at least a couple of minutes. After that, it was tea and small cakes a plenty. If you’ve never been, it certainly is something that I’d recommend you experience if you get the chance. Now I’ve done it once I know what it’s all about so probably wouldn’t rush back.

Not until, that is, I’m called to the Palace to receive my Knighthood!

Am I getting too old?

August 31st, 2009

I think age must be taking it’s toll.

I don’t remember struggling to keep going on a ‘boys day out’ in Edinburgh prior to Saturday; but this time, it was different. In my defence, keeping in mind we were getting the last train back to Markinch at just after 11 o’clock, we started on our adventure in Auld Reekie fairly early - 2 o’clock in fact. There followed a few ’social drinks’ and far too much junk food to be healthy. Having burgers and pizza in one day can’t be good for you.

It was good to catch up with friends from school though and since they are (mostly!) sensible grown ups with wives and children getting us all together in one place for a night out is quite the feat these days. We don’t make a habit of it, but try to do it at least a few times a year. Since we are all the same age our conversations turned, as they often do these days, to our next Big Birthday… which isn’t too many years off. We made tentative plans to all jet off for our birthday celebrations to The U.S. At the time it all seemed like a great idea.

Trying to persuade their wives it’s a good idea might not be quite so straightforward!
