Frequent Flyer

September 26th, 2009

I spend too long sitting in departure lounges and on aircraft these days hearing the same announcements to the point that I can probably repeat them verbatum in my sleep. And as much as I listen intently to the safety demonstrations I wish for a slight change every now and then.

Actually I wish for these guys: Southwest Airlines. The link will take you to a CBS report of the rapping flight attendant on SWA. It got me thinking though that something like this will both make you pay attention and coudl help with the nervous flyer by providing a distraction.

So here’s my promise to the likes of Easyjet and Flybe; start making the announcements just a little bit special and I’ll make sure more of my fellow passengers pay attention.

Doggy visitors on the Breakfast Show!

September 18th, 2009

It’s the end of another week - and one that we will remember fondly on the Breakfast Show.  On ‘bring your dog to work day’ we decided, as we both don’t have dogs, that listeners should be able to bring theirs in instead!
Thanks to Leanne and Elizabeth who brought in their cute furry friends for the morning!

Don’t forget ‘The Word Is Out’ returns on Monday morning on Kingdom FM - I don’t as I’ve got a week off.  Some bloke called Darren Stenhouse is sitting in for me with Diane.  Apparently he’s supposed to be quite good!
Behave while I’m away!

A goblin in the studio and someone grabs the cash…a busy week on Breakfast!

September 13th, 2009

It was all go last week on the Breakfast show - one lucky listener managed to pocket the cash in ‘The Word Is Out’ after correctly guessing that ‘Translator’ was the occupation that had been blanked out of our sentence. It had taken over two months to be guessed - but don’t despair, a new ‘Word Is Out’ clip will be here to drive you mad soon!

And the goblin??….you may remember we chatted on air about a couple in Coventry who held a birthday party for their 50-year-old fridge.  We asked you to call in and tell us if you have a household appliance older than 50…well you did!!  But no-one could beat Ben from Methil who’s Goblin Hoover sucked up the competition, purchased back in 1922 by his mother - it is 87 years old and still has a lifetime guarantee!!
Pictured below is Ben with us two - don’t ask what Diane is doing with the nozzle and why she has the brush attachment on top of her head….

Flick To Kick!

September 10th, 2009

Do you remember subbuteo? Well I certainly do. It was one of my favourite games all those years ago. I had the pitch and goals, around 20 teams and a real life subbuteo FA cup to play for! If you’re not familiar with it then let me explain. It was a football based game played on a table (or floor). You laid your pitch out, set up your teams and hey presto you were ready to go. After that all you needed to do is flick your player onto the ball to make it move - flick to kick!

Anyway like all good things, production came to an end. My subbuteo was packed away and put up the attic never to appear again. Until earlier this year. A bit of discussion in the office about the game and a search on the internet revelaed that it was back in production in Italy under the name Zeugo. Curiosity got the better of me and a mail order later I had a 2009 subbuteo team in my hand. They have kept very true to the original game however the players seem slightly larger. Well one thing led to another and the first annual subbuteo competition took place 2 weeks ago. How did I get on? Well let’s just say that I better get some practice in for next year or the wooden spoon will become a fixture in my kitchen :-(

You can always win cash at ‘T’ time!

September 9th, 2009

Weekdays at Kingdom FM you have three chances to win cold hard cash.

I’m talking, of course, about the Word Is Out, the missing word game which, as I write, has a prize fund of £1160. You can play twice on Kingdom Breakfast in the morning, at 7.15 and 9.15, and with me on Overdrive at 5.15.

Tonght’s wrong guess was the latest in a very long line of guesses so I’ve decided to give you a clue; and unlike the clue from Ian & Diane, I think it will help you get your hands on the money!

The answer to The Word Is Out starts with the letter…..(insert drum roll here!)…. T !

Did they mislead you?

September 1st, 2009

I don’t think that Ian & Diane from Kingdom Breakfast were deliberately trying to mislead you!

In fact, I know that they weren’t. But I still got the feeling, having heard their clue for The Word Is Out, that despite their best intentions, perhaps their clue didn’t really help at all!

The missing word, that today is worth £1020, is a job/occupation that Ian & Diane said wasn’t out of the ordinary. I know what they were trying to do. They were trying to get you away from thinking about things like “astronaut” or “Lion Tamer” (which, of course, couldn’t possibly be correct ‘cos it’s 2 words! That said, I have to say I don’t know anyone who does the job we’re looking for, nor have I ever met anyone who does it. But then again I lead a sheltered life!

Guess you’ll just have to keep listening and playing along with your lists… for over a thousand pounds, it’s worth it! To help you out, here are some more wrong guesses: binman, gardener, housewife, mortician, reporter, lookalike, perfectionist, presenter.
